Thanksgiving shoppers: Friendsgiving vs. Family Dinner

By Brianna Newton-Jackson, outreach lead at Hashtag Cannabis

Thanksgiving may look a little different this year as we stay safely at home, but that doesn’t mean we can’t still can’t have some fun this holiday season with Zoom calls and cannabis.

Let’s turn our Thanksgiving celebration from home into an epic Danksgiving with friends … and maybe even our family members.

At Hashtag Cannabis, we have an exciting variety of products for either occasion, and — if you are lucky like me -- for both gatherings!

For my holiday festivities, I picked out a few discreet goodies for the family Facetime call, and I’m also going to make some LOUD and tasty infused treats, along with virtually sharing tons of joints with friends.

A Discreet Family Facetime Dinner

Some of you may have a family like mine -- they aren’t against cannabis use, but they don’t really like to be necessarily involved with my choice to consume or partake. When I am hanging with them, I often go for more discreet approaches to enjoying cannabis products.

Not only do I choose discretion over the louder cannabis options, but I also like to keep my doses low and sometimes incorporate a little CBD.

The first thing on my shopping list this year is the perfect primer before dinner is served, Mr. Moxey’s 1:1 CBD balanced mints. These microdosed mints are equal parts of CBD and THC, and only contain 2.5mg per serving of each cannabinoid! They are an easy, inconspicuous treat to snack on while socializing with family. I find that starting slow and incorporating CBD allows me to maintain a clear mind and a happy heart.

Pro tip: Sometimes, interacting with family members (even via video chat) around this time of year can feel a bit overwhelming -- another reason I like to add that dose of CBD.

As dinner approaches, I am excited to pair my savory meal with Happy Apple’s 1:1 CBD apple cider.

This beverage is perfectly balanced, and the potency is a little higher to give you a feel good buzz that will definitely last through dinner and possibly beyond.

Pro tip: Try heating your Happy Apple for a delicious infused hot cider!

Don’t worry, though--if you don’t need a 30mg serving, there is a neat little doser cap attached to the top so you can drink it slowly, 10mg at a time.

The best part of this drink, it can also be saved to heat up as a hot cider -- perfectly paired with that pie after dinner!

Speaking of apple pie, let’s dive into how we can celebrate Friendsgiving with some bolder cannabis choices.

This year, I am so excited to bake my first ever infused pie for my virtual Danksgiving with friends, a STONEY apple pie infused with distillate oil. Stay tuned for the recipe below!

But first, let’s see what I picked up …

A Very Dank Video Call Friendsgiving

First on the Danksgiving list, lots of flowers and pre rolled joints!

Since it’s a celebration, I decided to treat myself with some high end flower, Frosted Lemons from Gabriel.

This potent, lemony strain is energizing and social. It is perfect to pack into your favorite bong or roll into joints for the virtual smoke sesh -- either option is smooth as butter.

Pro tip: This potent, lemony strain energizes and elevates.

Second on my Friendsgiving list, Dank Czar’s “party pack” of Frosted Cake pre-rolled joints. This euphoric, balanced hybrid will pair perfectly with that infused dessert pie and post-feast reset.

Every party needs a party pack of pre-rolled joints!

Treat yourself with a 10 pack of Dank Czar pre-rolled joints this Danksgiving.

I absolutely love that these joints come in a pack of TEN! With that many joints, it will surely be a stoney and giggle-filled evening for everyone on the video chat.

The last item on my shopping list, and most important of them all, the main ingredient for the Stoney apple pie -- Pearl Extracts’ distillate concentrate syringe.

Pearl Extracts Distillate THC Syringe.

Pro tip: Using this oil is a simple and potent way to infuse any treat — without having to go through the hassle (and smell) of making cannabutter from scratch.

To keep things simple this year, I decided to use Savannah Hammontree’s Stoney Apple Pie Recipe.

Sav is our awesome store manager at Hashtag Redmond, and she wrote a fabulous blog a few years back teaching us all how to make the most delicious infused apple pie. Just read the link above for the whole recipe!

So how does this distillate oil come into play? Well, in the pie filling, of course! I will be using this Pearl distillate oil to make a quick cannabis-infused butter within the pie filling-- yum! I cannot wait to try out this recipe and enjoy a slice ... or two.

How to make distillate-infused butter

Note: Make this infused butter at least one day before you plan to use it — the butter needs to harden in your fridge overnight before using.

  1. To infuse my butter with distillate, I melted one stick (8 tbsps) of butter over medium heat.

  2. Once the butter was melted, I added 0.5g of the distillate to the butter and stirred for about 10 minutes to ensure everything was homogenized.

  3. I poured my butter into a glass container and placed it in the fridge to harden overnight.

  4. You will need to do this process ahead of time, so be sure to plan accordingly. Once your butter has hardened overnight, you are ready to get baking!

However you choose to celebrate this long weekend, please keep it safe from the comfort of your home, and be sure to enjoy cannabis in whatever way makes you feel most comfortable and happy.

From everyone at Hashtag Cannabis, we wish you a very happy holiday season!

Recipe for Sav’s Stoney Apple Pie

Serves: 6-8

Ingredients:

2.5-3 lbs. Granny Smith apples

3-4 tbsp. infused butter (I used 4 tbsp., but if you want less liquid [and less potency!] in your pie, 3 tbsp. is fine)

1 ½ cup brown sugar

1 ¼ tbsp. cinnamon

1 ¼ tsp. nutmeg

2 tbsp. cornstarch

½ lemon

1 egg

2 premade pie crusts

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 425°. While oven is preheating, peel and slice your apples into thin slices, and squeeze the lemon half over the apples to prevent browning.

  • In a skillet over medium heat, combine apple slices, butter, cinnamon, nutmeg, and stir. Slowly add the cornstarch in little by little, stirring as you go.

  • Once the sauce is brown and thick and apples are softened but still maintain some snap, remove from heat.

  • Place one premade pie crust in the bottom of a pie pan, and add your apple filling. Add your top pie crust, making sure you add slits or cutouts to allow the steam to escape while baking. If you’re feeling extra fancy, get decorative and go with a lattice pattern or some other creative design! Finish with an egg wash over top crust.

  • Place pie pan in the center of the oven rack, and bake for 25-30 minutes or until crust is golden and flaky brown.
