Key 2026 Cannabis Regulation Updates

1. Updated Licensing Requirements
The Washington State Liquor and Cannabis Board (WSLCB) is tightening licensing rules for producers, processors, and retailers.

According to the WSLCB’s September 2025 statement on Cannabis Retail Licenses:

“Beginning Jan. 1, 2026, licensees who do not comply … may get … fines, and/or license suspension or forfeiture.”

So you can expect stricter background checks, revised renewal processes, and updated operational standards for all cannabis businesses.

This change aims to maintain quality, transparency, and consumer safety across the state.

2. Packaging and Labeling Changes
2026 regulations will require more detailed product labeling. Key updates include:

  • Clearer THC and CBD content disclosure

  • Mandatory allergen information for edibles

  • Enhanced child-resistant packaging standards

The LCB’s rule‑making memo states that under new rules:

“a total THC concentration … is calculated for any individual tetrahydrocannabinol compound present in amounts greater than 0.2 mg/g.”

These changes will help consumers make informed choices while reducing accidental consumption, especially among minors.

3. Potency Limits on Certain Products
Some high-potency concentrates and edibles may face new THC limits.

These measures are designed to ensure safer consumption and prevent overconsumption, particularly for new or inexperienced users.

Other products, like low-dose beverages, would also be impacted by this rule change.

The rule changes in WSR 24‑16‑126 implement limits “related to low‑THC beverages” among other THC‑product regulations.
