What is Distillate Made Of?
By Jeff Eckenrode
Highly refined, sophisticated and potent.
Cannabis distillate is a highly refined and powerful extract. It’s become popular because it’s versatile and can be used in many ways.
But what is it exactly? How is it made? And where can you find it?
What is distillate oil?
Distillate is a pure cannabis oil made by heating and vaporizing cannabinoids from the plant.
It’s clear, has little to no taste or smell, and can be high in either THC or CBD.
How is Distillate Made?
Cannabis concentrates are made using different extraction methods, which affect their strength and quality.
To make distillate, producers use solvents like ethanol, CO2, or hydrocarbons. These solvents remove unwanted plant materials like waxes and fats, leaving behind pure THC or CBD.
A key step in this process is winterization, which further purifies the oil, making it cleaner and more potent.
How is distillate made using Carbon Dioxide?
This method uses super-cold carbon dioxide (CO2) to pull cannabinoids from the plant.
CO2 extraction is precise and clean, making it popular in industries like essential oils and botanical medicine. Though it costs more, it’s often seen as a safer and purer method.
How is distillate made using Ethanol?
Ethanol is another common way to make distillate. Unlike CO2, this method doesn’t require heat or pressure.
A well-known product called Rick Simpson Oil (RSO) is made using ethanol. As extraction methods improve, ethanol is becoming more widely used.
Where can I find Distillate?
Distillate is used in many cannabis products, including:
Vape Cartridges – Found in refillable and disposable vape pens.
Edibles – Used in gummies, chocolates, and baked goods.
Topicals – Added to lotions and balms for pain relief.
Beverages – Infused into cannabis drinks.
Distillate is strong, easy to flavor, and can be made from lower-potency cannabis while still delivering powerful effects.
