Making RSO Edibles
by Tyler Meier, Redmond assistant store manager
Quick Answer: RSO (Rick Simpson Oil) is a highly potent full-spectrum cannabis extract that can be taken orally or incorporated into food to mask its strong earthy flavor. Start with a rice-grain-sized dose (~100mg equivalent) and wait 90 minutes before considering more. Two easy methods: sandwiched between ice cream or sherbet, or folded inside a fruit leather strip.
Edibles can be a medicinal time or an entertaining time for a lot of individuals. I enjoy edibles for their lengthy experience and engagement throughout my body and mind. RSO (Rick Simpson Oil) is a viscous sap derived from cannabis plant material that can be found in our shops, available in an oral-use syringe.
I find that RSO’s taste can be unpleasant if you aren’t ready for a fully-extracted cannabis plant flavor. To help with the somewhat earthy & weedy taste, I’ve developed some home-brew, DIY flavor enhancements to help the RSO go down.
A thing to note: you can always increase your total dosage of cannabis, but you cannot take any away. You can feel uncomfortable if you overdo a dosage beyond your comfort zone. I personally start with a rice-grain sized dose, as that is often the metric to achieve an approximate 100mg edible. So start LOW, and go SLOW!
Sherbet Spoon Edible
One way to help ingest RSO is by using your favorite ice cream or sherbet as a sort of frozen sandwich system. Here’s how I do it:
Take a small spoon
Scoop up a thin layer of your flavor base
squeeze a rice grain sized amount of RSO in the center of the flavor base
Pull syringe away & cap it
use another spoon to scoop a second small layer of your flavor base
set the second layer on top of the first
sandwiching the RSO between the chilly dessert
I enjoy this process because the frozen consistency turns the gooey RSO firm once it touches the chilly surface, making it easier to work with for dosing. Make sure that your flavor layers aren’t too big, otherwise you might get brain freeze!
Fruit Leather Fold-Up
Another way to eat RSO where you taste the RSO the least, is using a fruit wrap of your choice to fold up the RSO into a little edible roll.
Tear off a few inches piece of a fruit strip
Squeeze out a rice grain size of RSO onto the fruit strip
Tuck in the sides of the fruit roll, and fold the RSO into the fruit roll
Fold a few times for full coverage
Be careful not to make the roll too big
Swallow whole, bring a glass of water to help it go down
And that's the way I do it!

FAQ Making RSO Edibles
What is RSO and how is it different from other cannabis products?
RSO (Rick Simpson Oil) is a full-spectrum, whole-plant cannabis extract made by concentrating cannabinoids from dried flower using a solvent like ethanol or CO2. The result is a thick, dark, viscous oil dispensed in a syringe — with no carrier oils or additives. Unlike distillate or vapes, RSO retains the full range of cannabinoids, terpenes, and plant compounds, making it one of the most potent and therapeutically complete cannabis products available. It's also discreet and odorless, suitable for oral use or incorporation into food.
How do I dose RSO safely as a beginner?
Start with a rice-grain-sized amount — approximately one-eighth of an inch from the syringe tip. This is often the equivalent of around 100mg of cannabis, which is a significant dose for most people. Wait a full 90 minutes before considering more, as RSO takes time to absorb through the digestive system. The golden rule with RSO is start LOW and go SLOW. You can always take more at a future session, but you cannot undo a dose that's too high.
What does RSO taste like and how do I make it more palatable?
RSO has a strong, earthy, weedy flavor — the natural taste of a fully extracted cannabis plant with nothing to mask it. Many people find it unpleasant on its own. The two most popular home methods for improving palatability are: sandwiching a rice-grain dose between layers of ice cream or sherbet (the cold firms the oil and masks the flavor), or folding it into a fruit leather strip and swallowing it whole with water (which covers the taste almost entirely).
How do I make a Sherbet Spoon RSO edible?
Use two spoons. Scoop a thin layer of your favorite ice cream or sherbet onto the first spoon, then squeeze a rice-grain-sized amount of RSO directly onto the center of that layer. Cap the syringe. Use the second spoon to scoop a matching layer on top, sandwiching the RSO between the two cold layers. The frozen temperature firms up the normally gooey RSO, making it much easier to handle and dose accurately. Eat immediately and avoid over-large scoops to prevent brain freeze.
How do I make a Fruit Leather RSO edible?
Tear off a few inches of your favorite fruit strip or fruit leather. Squeeze a rice-grain-sized amount of RSO onto the center of the strip. Fold in the sides of the strip and roll it tightly several times to fully encase the RSO inside the fruit leather. Swallow the roll whole (don't chew it), with a full glass of water to help it go down. This method minimizes RSO's flavor almost completely and is one of the most effective ways to take it discreetly.
Why do people choose RSO over other cannabis products?
RSO is chosen primarily for its potency and full-spectrum profile. Because it retains cannabinoids, terpenes, and other plant compounds, it may produce stronger therapeutic effects through the entourage effect compared to isolated extracts. It's a popular choice for medical cannabis patients managing chronic pain, inflammation, or other conditions requiring high-potency, long-lasting relief. It's also a good option for consumers who prefer oral consumption over inhalation and want a discreet, odorless product.
