CBD for Pets: Effects, Uses, and Helpful Products

by Jeff Eckenrode, COO

If you’ve ever visited one of our stores, then it’s likely that you noticed the wide variety of CBD products we have to offer. And for a great reason, too! There is decades of scientific research to support the claims that CBD products are awesome at fighting fatigue, combating anxiety, and minimizing physical discomfort for humans.

But have you ever wondered if these products can help our furry friends, too?

If you have, then you’re in the right place! Use this guide so you can learn more about CBD, its effects on pets, how to use it, and more!

How can CBD help my pet?

Just like humans, dogs and cats can begin to feel more aches and pains as they age.

Fortunately, CBD is a fantastic option to help your pet feel better and improve the quality of their life!

What is CBD, and how does it work?

Cannabidiol (known as “CBD” for short) is a molecule that naturally occurs in cannabis plants. Like THC, CBD bonds with specialized receptors in the body (called “cannabinoid receptors”) when we consume cannabis.

Unlike THC, CBD doesn’t make you "high,” and it isn’t known to cause any negative side effects. Experts aren’t completely sure how CBD interacts with the body, but they know it interacts with cannabinoid receptors differently than THC does.

Is CBD dangerous for my pet?

CBD (or THC) in high doses can be dangerous for dogs and cats. Unlike humans, there are cannabinoid receptors in dogs and cats' brains. So consuming large amounts of THC or CBD can interfere with their heart and lung function.

The best way to avoid these adverse effects is to start with a low dosage, and go slow when introducing CBD to your pet.

What is CBD good for?

While the details of how CBD interacts with humans and pets bodies are still under debate, research suggests that CBD can help with chronic conditions including pain, nausea, and anxiety.

What CBD product should I try first?

Since pets have different dietary needs than humans, using a tincture like Fairwinds’ Companion or Green Revolution’s Bella & Max is the best and easiest product if you want to introduce your pet to CBD.

What dosage is right for my pet?

Both Companion and Bella & Max have simple, easy-to-use dosing instructions: one drop for each 5 lb. that your pet weighs, mixed with a treat or their regular meal.

  • Have a 15-pound cat? 3 drops would be the correct dose.

  • Have a 65-pound dog? 6-7 drops would be the correct dose.

What if I accidentally give my pet too much CBD?
Don’t panic; this problem is more common than you might think!

In the beginning, most pet owners accidentally give their pet a few drops too many.

The most common side effect of this is that your pet will become sleepy and sensitive to sound and touch. These effects often last for a few hours at most.

If this happens, I repeat—don't panic—let your fuzzy friend cuddle with you and just nap it off.

However, if your pet becomes unresponsive or begins vomiting, then contacting your vet is the next best decision. From there, they can advise you on what is best for your pet.

What else should I know about CBD and pets?

Even when you administer the correct dose to your pet, it’s likely they’ll become very thirsty, especially if it’s their first dose.

The best solution? Be a courteous stoner, and provide your pet with a fresh bowl of water!
